When we ask students to write with attention to detail, they often lack interpersonal and life experiences from which to draw such details. Instead of "what would I do if," we can move to a "what did I do when" scenario for students while also building class community and giving students virtual experiences that surpass limitations the real world imposes.

Diane Main serves as Director of Learning, Innovation and Design (9-12) at The Harker School in San Jose, California. She is also adjunct faculty for San Diego State University's Learning Design and Technology department and MERIT/KCI faculty at Krause Center for Innovation and Foothill College in Los Altos Hills, California.
